A few weeks back, I was itching to make a small woodwork project after doing a bunch of metal working and 3d printing. At the time, I didn’t particularly need anything in our house made from wood, so I reached out to Twitter and FaceBook and asked for ideas.  There were a TON of great ideas but Joshua showed a picture of a cake knife that he’d made and it really caught my eye.  It makes sense to use a wooden knife for cutting soft things like cake and bread, but I’d never even seen one.
So, I grabbed some scrap wood and got to work. In no time, I had a cake knife that I was pretty happy with.  This is a great, easy project that you can make from about any scrap hard woods. Generally, for wood and finish, treat it just like you would a cutting board. Use food safe finished (I used a mix of boiled linseed oil and beeswax) and hard woods with a tight grain.
